Overview

  • The energy consumption of transport remained stable in 2023, around 284 Mtoe at EU level, after a progression by 5.5%/year between 2020 and 2022. It follows a sharp decrease in 2020 (-13%) due to the impacts of COVID crisis. Previously, it grew from 2013 to 2019 with the economic growth rebound (+1.5%/year), which contrasted with the previous period when it decreased in a context of economic stagnation (-1.6%/year from 2010 to 2013). 
  • In 2023, the energy consumption of transport of the EU was 3% below its pre-COVID level and 1% above its 2010 level.

  • Energy consumption in transport slightly decreased compared to its 2010 level in most countries, apart from some eastern countries, where it has increased between 1% and 3%/year: around 1%/year in Czechia and Hungary, 2%/year in Bulgaria, and 3%/year in Poland, Lithuania and Romania.
