Specific consumption of new cars (incl. electric and plug-in hybrid) by country
- The average specific consumption of new cars (incl. electric and plug-in hybrid) has decreased by 4.6%/year at EU level since 2013 to 33 goe/km.
- There are significant discrepancies between EU countries in 2023, with a maximum of around 42 goe/km in Estonia, Czechia and Poland, almost twice that of Sweden. Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Denmark), Belgium and the Netherlands are in the lower range (less than 26 goe/km) due to a high penetration of electric cars (34-38% in 2023 for the 3 Nordic countries, compared to 14% for the EU average), while most of Eastern countries are in the higher range (above 40 goe/km).
Specific consumption of new cars (incl. electric and hybrid cars)
- The decline in specific consumption of new cars has accelerated significantly since 2019, with the rapid penetration of electric cars. At EU level, the decrease was three times faster after 2019 than before(-7.6%/year since 2019, compared to -2.6%/year over 2013-2019); indeed, the share of electric cars increased by 12 pp since 2019 to 14% in 2023 (+19 pp including PHEV to 22%), compared to a progression of 2 pp only between 2013 and 2019 (+ 3 pp including PHEV).
