Share of road in transport energy consumption

Road transport absorbs 93% of the final energy consumption of transport in the EU in 2023 (range 83-99%).
The share of road transport has increased since 2010 at EU level (+0.6 pp), and in 20 MS. The highest increases are found in eastern countries (more than 3 pp for Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Estonia and up to 13 pp for Slovakia). It decreased sharply in Greece (- 4 pp to the benefit of pipe and air) and slightly in 6 MS. It is the lowest in Greece and Spain (83% and 87% respectively), because of water transport (10% in Greece in 2023 and air transport in Spain (8%).
