Heating energy consumption by energy source
- Natural gas is the leading energy source for households space heating in the EU, with a decreasing share since 2021 (37% in 2023, 39% in 2010 and 37% in 2000).
- The share of electricity stood at 7% in 2023, slightly above 2000 and 2010 levels (around 6%).
- Oil is slowly being phased out (-11 points, from 25% in 2000 to 18% in 2010 and 14% in 2023) but remains significant in some Member States such as Cyprus and Ireland (>50%).
- Renewables are progressing (+12 points, from 16% in 2000 to 23% in 2010 and 28% in 2023).
- The share of heat is almost stable, from 11% in 2000 to 10% in 2010 and 11% in 2023.
