Energy consumption of large appliances per dwelling

  • EU households’ specific consumption for small appliances grew by 3.6%/year between 2000 and 2019 (from around 400 kWh/dwelling in 2000 to 770 kWh in 2019,) due to higher equipment rates, and has decreased since then to 740 kWh in 2023.
  • The specific consumption of large appliances decreased regularly, by 1%/year over the period 2000-2023, thanks to labels and standards.
  • Large appliances still account for the largest share of appliance consumption: 57% of the specific consumption of appliances in 2023, compared to 64% in 2010 and 76% in 2000. This share is stable since 2019.
  • Energy efficiency of large electrical appliances is improving rapidly, which allow to compensate the fast-growing consumption of small appliances. This has resulted in a small decline in appliance consumption since 2010 (-0.6%/year).
