Energy efficiency trends in cement industry
- The specific consumption of cement has decreased since 2010 in 8 EU MS (Belgium, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden) and at EU level (- 1%/year over 2010-2023).
- Between 2010 and 2019, the specific consumption has decreased in most countries, except those strongly affected by the economic crisis (e.g. Spain). Since 2019, energy efficiency in cement production improved in most EU countries, except in some countries where the specific consumption remains almost stable (Italy, Belgium, Germany and Croatia).
- Differences among countries are explained by differences in the efficiency of clinker production, the energy intensive component of cement, as well as in the ratio clinker to cement production: the higher this ratio, the higher the specific energy consumption.
