Energy consumption trends in EU
In 2023, the energy consumption of industry reached its lowest level since 2000, due to a significant decrease since 2021.
- The energy consumption of industry has been decreasing by 6%/year since 2021, because of large price increases (+101% for gas and +62% for electricity) reaching its lowest level since 2000 in 2023 (-21% lower). It has been fluctuating before over 2010-2019, after a sharp decline between 2007 and 2009 following the financial crisis.
- It decreased from 2011 to 2014, with a reduction in industrial activity. It then rose between 2014 and 2018, following a strong growth in industrial activity, and decreased again between 2018 and 2020 due to a slowdown in industrial growth and the Covid crisis.
- Electricity followed the same trend as total consumption.
