Share of electricity in total consumption
- Three EU countries have a significantly higher share of electricity than the EU average (54% in 2023): Greece, Portugal and Ireland (more than 70%).In Ireland, this high penetration is partly explained by the high development of data centres, which explain 10 points of the electricity share in 2023 (60% share without data centres, 70% with them).
- Increasing penetration of electricity in most EU countries, especially in Slovakia where this rate more than doubled between 2000 and 2023, or in Ireland (+30 pp) and Slovenia (+19 pp). Since 2010, the highest progression is observed in Poland (+18 pp), followed by The Netherlands and Ireland (+14 and +13 pp). In Ireland, this is almost entirely linked to data centres.
- Decreasing share in 7 EU countries, with the strongest reduction in Romania (-9 pp) and Bulgaria (-4 pp).
